A Clairemont mother is talking today about a near-drowning that nearly took the life of her three-year-old son. She and her family got to meet the Good Samaritan who lent a lifesaving hand.
It was a happy homecoming for three-year-old Kaleb Corcino, just 24 hours after he nearly drowned in a pool at the family's apartment complex.
"I'm having a really hard time sleeping. Every time I'm not busy or keeping myself busy, I picture him at the bottom of the pool," Kaleb's mother Andrea said.
Andrea, her friend and three other boys were all packing up from a busy day of swimming when little Kaleb reached into the water to grab one of his safety floaties and fell in.
"He tells me that he was calling me, which is why we think he swallowed so much water," Andrea said.
With pale skin, blue lips and a lifeless body, that's when Carlos Otero - the man Andrea calls her son's guardian angel - stepped in. Kaleb's mom says Carlos heard the screams from the south side of the apartment complex and ran over and scaled a six-foot wall. Carlos then pulled little Kaleb to safety and performed CPR until he regained consciousness and paramedics arrived.
More amazing than his theatrical-like save is the fact that Carlos had just learned CPR the day before. He spoke to News 8 shortly after the incident.
"He started to breathe, then he started to cry," Otero said.
The Corcinos got to meet and thank Carlos for his courageous move, and wanted to give this hero the proper respect and credit he's due for saving their son's life.
"We all know if he wasn't there, he wouldn't be here," Andrea said.
